LOVE Tapes Collective
Founded in 1972, L.O.V.E. (Lesbians Organized for Video Experience) was a pioneering collective that documented the Lesbian and Feminist movements during a pivotal era of activism. Utilizing ½-inch reel-to-reel video Portapaks—an innovative technology at the time—they recorded grassroots protests, cultural events, and the fight for LGBTQ+ rights between 1972 and 1977.
Their extensive archive, now fully digitized and cataloged, includes unedited original footage from the 1973 and 1974 Lesbian and Gay Marches in New York, along with key events organized by Lesbian Feminist Liberation (LFL). Among these historic recordings is firsthand footage of Marsha P. Johnson’s iconic demand—“I want my civil rights!”—a powerful moment of resistance that continues to inspire generations.
As an organization that bore witness to history, L.O.V.E. has provided invaluable documentation of the LGBTQ+ rights movement in its early years. Their footage is now being incorporated into HOW WE MARCH, a music video project that honors Marsha P. Johnson’s legacy and furthers the fight for Trans rights, ensuring that these historic moments remain visible and impactful today.
