Behind The Music
PROTEST brought together artists to reflect on justice movements and create space for healing and change through music.
Aaron Gabriel’s song “This Is How We March” was originally written as part of PROTEST—a musical song cycle created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and community uprisings following the murder of George Floyd.

Out of that larger work, HOW WE MARCH emerged as something larger — rooted in queer legacy and resistance.
Gabriel’s lyrics reference STARR House, legendary figures in queer liberation, and allusions to survival and street life. The song captures the idea of Marsha P.’s legacy as something alive and ever-evolving, carried forward by community.
In all, HOW WE MARCH is an art-driven tribute, not a documentary or dramatization. It seeks to celebrate, educate, and activate viewers into a shared space of visibility and advocacy through music and collective storytelling.
